“How Antigua Guatemala Became My Home” by Nancy Hoffman

While working in Denver Colorado, it  as very important to me to know and use Spanish in order to communicate with many of my clients there.  I decided to take a short vacation to Antigua and “check-out” Spanish schools.
After arriving at the airport and not knowing how to communicate with the immigration and custom officials, I then had to get myself to Antigua.  Thankfully, there were other “gringos” also going to Antigua, and we all found a shuttle.
I checked-in to the “Bugambilia” hotel and immediately ate a wonderful “typical” breakfast of  eggs, beans, platanos, cheese, tortillas and coffee.
Instead of going to my room for a nap, I decided to walk the streets in search of a school.  Little did I know there was one school on every corner!
After looking at and talking with several schools, I decided I wanted a place that was pretty to be in, had afternoon activities, and especially had people who spoke English, so as to minimize my “culture shock”.
I chose the ALM school and they set me up with a family to stay with.  I was enjoying my experience so much, I decided to stay a little longer.
Being that I am the youngest in my family, my mom decided to visit and make sure all was o.k.
At that point, I took a break from my spanish studies and volunteered my time at a travel agency of a Guatemalan friend of mine.
While translating his itineraries into English, I got to know a friend of his. Luis and I spent many hours talking - with my Spanish/English dictionary close at hand.
Well, mom finally came to visit.  In 10 days, we went to Panajachel, Chichi, Todos Santos, Zunil, Tikal, Copán and  Rio Dulce.  Mom met my new friend Luis, and wondered if I was ever going to return to the USA.
Almost 2 years later, I am still here.  Luis and I were married, and though I no longer rely so much on my dictionary, I still consider myself a student of the language.
Luis and I have opened our own Travel Agency - VISION - where we focus on tourist services.  We both want for tourists to be able to explore and enjoy Antigua and Guatemala.  We have many guidebooks to look through, and we sit down with every client to plan their itinerary, answer questions, or just catch up on world events.

Our office: VISION - Servicios Turisticos - is located at: 3a. Av. Norte #3 (Casa de Mito).
You don’t have to buy anything to stop in and say “hello”.  We look forward to hearing your stories!
